Audience Theory

What is the purpose of the media?

  • Diversion - Is a way of escape where you do things that make you forget about the stresses of the real world. For me, i like listening to music and watching things that make me laugh.
  • Personal Relationships - Talking to people about what's in the media is included in your own relationships. So when your with friends/family and you tell them about your favourite song or what was on TV; your identifying media through discussion.
  • Personal Identity - Is being able to compare yourself with characters and situations that are portrayed. You get an insight to other people's lives and explore individual problems, perspectives and morals. Also we can learn a lot more about ourselves and those around us. When we read/watch something, we can compare and sympathise with others.
  • Surveillance - Information about 'what's going on' in the world.

Demographics -
definition: The characteristics and statistical information that distinguish a group of people. These characteristics commonly include age, gender, ethnicity, occupation, interests and other criteria. A business' target demographic captures the group of people at which their products or services are aimed at.

So if you've just visited a gaming site, your likely to find that when you go on other sites with advertisement banners (like FaceBook), their ads are specifically aimed at you. For example - you might see GAME or HMV offers up at the top because they want you to click on their link.

  1. Excellent note taking. Shows me that you have grasped the value of the blog as a place to store your notes and work. Well done, I have been very impressed with your approach in class and what I see on the blog is equally impressive.
